Launch of New Pupil-Led Academic Journal

8th October 2024
BY Pupils, Louis Chen & Henry Ng

We are glad to announce the publication of the first issue of Sapientia, the Academic Journal of Winchester College. The purpose of the journal is to be an alternative medium for pupils to share independent insights and academic findings that go beyond the confines of the curriculum and to highlight different fields of scholarship.

We are also aiming to maintain academic diversity. Although an emphasis on STEM subjects is definitely helpful and practical in our contemporary world, we would also like to give opportunities to students of the humanities and the social sciences to be well represented. We firmly believe that in an era where AI continues to grow and develop, humanities and social scientific research will take more prominence as we shift our focus back to the “human”.

In a sense, we hope that the journal encapsulates the conflicting age our generation dwells in: we were able to exploit the whole capacity of AI for image generation in our journal, yet our words and ideas are voices that are indubitably individual and unique.

In this issue we cover articles from various disciplines, including the social sciences, philosophy, and history, among others. Papers range from addressing the causes of financial crises, to the nature of elections, and also to comparative philosophical perspectives on universal themes like the self. Many articles were also put forward for submission in various other venues, most notably the John Locke Institute Global Essay Competition, where those that were submitted to the competition and published in the journal were all shortlisted.
